Local needs are met by city, township, county, parish, borough laws, but Republican State legislators and Republican Governors preempt the local laws to deny workers’ minimum wage, paid leave, fair work scheduling and prevailing wage.
Examples:
- Birmingham’s minimum wage increases passed by the Birmingham City Council, struck down by Republican legislature.
- Milwaukee’s paid sick leave passed by 69%, struck down by the Republican legislature.
- Cleveland minimum wage increases, struck down by Republican legislature (with Republican Governor John Kasich signing the State bill).
Since 1997, twenty-five States have blocked (preempted) local minimum wage laws; fourteen, in the last five years.
